Ingredients:
For the meatballs
1.5 lbs ground beef or pork
1/2 onion
2 tbsp plain yogurt
1 egg
4 tbsp Italian breadcrumbs
2 tbsp summer savory
1 tbsp ground black pepper
salt
For the tomato sauce:
2 cans diced tomatoes
3 cloves garlic
1/3 onion
salt
black pepper
cilantro
For the meatballs:
Mince the onion. In a large mixing bowl, combine all the ingredients. Using your hands, mix all ingredients until well incorporated. Form the meat into a 1/2 tennis ball sized meatballs (I wet my hands before shaping each meatball and it helps prevent sticking).
Place the meatballs in a hot pan where you previously heated 5 tbsp oil. Fry until outside is dark brown on one side and then turn and fry the other side.
For the tomato sauce:
In a hot skillet (you can use the same one you used for the meatballs, just drain most of the oil) add the minced onion and garlic. Let them fry for 3-4 min or until lightly golden. Add the tomato, salt and pepper and turn the heat to low. Let it simmer for 30min. Make sure you stir the tomato sauce every 7-8 min to prevent from sticking.
Once the sauce is ready, add the chopped cilantro and serve with the meatballs.
